Indiana used to promote itself as a ‘low-cost energy state.’  However, changes in regulations, generation capacity and fuel sources have moved Indiana toward the middle of the energy-cost pack.  This panel will explore why energy costs in Indiana are changing, how that may affect our competitive position and will offer potential public policy options for trying to keep Indiana competitive.

General Session: Water, water everywhere… or is there?

Water is an economic development resource that is easy to take for granted.  But as the Western United States continues to experience prolonged drought conditions, companies that require quantities of water are looking at places like Indiana as possible relocation targets.  But Indiana’s water supply isn’t guaranteed.  The Indiana Chamber has conducted a thorough review of Indiana’s water future and the results are provocative.  Madison County is considering a new reservoir that will drastically change the supply of water in Central Indiana and the future of Anderson.

Moderator: Mitch Roob, KERAMIDA

Vince Griffin, Indiana Chamber of Commerce

Chad Pigg, Council for Economic Development/Madison County

General Session: When the going gets tough, the tough Go Green - Get into the Green and Sustainable Scene

Green infrastructure and sustainability are fundamental business issues that are opening up new opportunities to reduce costs and increase revenue.  These issues are also introducing new risks, from brand and reputation to legal liability and regulatory compliance.  In 2013 six growing trends in corporate sustainability, a recent Ernst & Young survey of 272 respondents from 24 sectors that was conducted in cooperation with GreenBiz Group, 65% of respondents stated their CFO’s have become involved in sustainability.  Business leaders around the world understand the need for a more encompassing approach to sustainability.  From start-ups to large corporations to state and local governments, organizations worldwide are embracing clean technologies as an engine of growth, efficiency, sustainability and competitive advantage.   Sustainability is being seen as affecting a company’s ability to compete in addition to a community’s ability to compete for businesses and talent.  This trend from businesses to local governments should have economic developers’ attention.  This session will focus on how the economic developer can play a role in building their community by “getting into the green and sustainable scene.”
