Schools and economic development are inextricably linked: workforce has become one of the most critical drivers in attracting new development to Indiana. At the same time, tax increment finance (TIF) is one of few tools economic developers have for creating the physical environment conducive for new development. The complex relationship between schools, TIF, and economic development is often misunderstood. This workshop presented by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, Umbaugh and the Indiana Economic Development Association will talk about the increasingly important role that schools play in economic development, will explain how TIF works within a community, and will highlight best practices where schools and economic developers have launched projects together using TIF to accomplish common school and economic development goals.
